AMAZING. Every second book in the shop is described as a world bestseller. And in your public library your fishing fingers always seem to find an author labelled as a literary genius.
Not since the papyrus crop failed the pharaohs has there been such a big dilemma. It’s personal, it’s a plague, it’s a downright shame. The world is losing readers.
Because the hype brings disappointment, and that discourages further trust in authors one has not read before.
The writers who can shoot your mind into swift escape from the woes of work, family and world have become rarer than rubies. They do exist, yet can’t be found, and therefore many a lifetime reader quits, and just turns on the telly.
Bookstores and my local library stock books by the ton, not by content. They’ve no choice, because world publishing is now a commodity market.
Fast sellers dominate, pushed by big publicity. And that means the value of a book, for them, lies with marketeers.
The Marketing Manager outranks an Editor, because the Chief Accountant (who outranks everybody) is hungry for profit.
When it is too late, those giants who grip the book trade will find that readers, consistently disappointed, have gone.
Personally, I’m hanging on, desperate yet still hopeful. After all, the human species has never been without great stories and wondrous wordsmiths.
In the bleak bookshelf jungles, I’ve sometimes stumbled on a hidden gem. They’re hard to find, and only luck prevails.
They lurk unheralded at the rear of the shop or squeezed among translations, quirks and doorstops in my local library.
They’re getting scarcer, because even dedicated publishers, the torchbearers of reading, have to survive nowadays by reprinting classics or churning out genre dross. Or, yes, urgh, risking one of those low-cost translations of a book that wowed the tent dwellers of Outer Darkest Mongolia.
To explore the jungle there’s always the Amazon, and I probe its upper reaches exhaustively. Despite the postage cost, it has allowed me to keep faith in good reads.

Steven Spielberg’s breakout film, Jaws is the quintessential summer blockbuster, creating all the horror, thrills, suspense, and special effects you would expect from such a film. Not excessively violent or gruesome like traditional horror films, Jaws nonetheless manages to create an icy frost in every viewer’s veins. Based on the true story of a great white shark which terrorized the shores of New Jersey in the summer of 1916, Jaws is an ingenious adaptation of Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel inspired by the incident. Jaws tells the story of man’s eternal struggle against nature, a story so compelling it captures the imagination of every generation who hears it - from 1916 to 1975 to the present day.
Jaws takes place in the small New England beach resort of Amity Island, the perfect summer getaway for Northeastern tourists. But this Normal Rockwell community paradise is about to be turned upside down. Late one night, a young couple decides to go swimming. But when the woman’s mangled body is washed ashore the next morning, it’s clear to local authorities that she isn’t a typical drowning victim. The medical examiner informs Police Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) that the woman could have been the victim of a shark attack, but Amity Mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) refuses to speculate, fearing that public knowledge of a shark attack would kill the local economy.
When another shark attacks occurs, this time is broad daylight, the incident draws shark expert Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) to the area. Working with Chief Brody, Hooper postulates that a great white shark is responsible for the attacks, and the swimming population is in great danger. Meanwhile, a shark hunter named Quint offers to find and kill the shark for $10,000, but Mayor Vaughn believes that price is too high. More and more beach combers will have to be slaughtered before he’ll agree to acknowledge the seriousness of the problem, and when the authorities finally decide to go after the great white, the really danger is only beginning.
With brilliant direction and state-of-the-art special effects (satisfactory even by today’s standards), Jaws is a true edge-of-your-seat thriller wrought with suspense. The unknown is masterfully woven throughout the movie with a crescendo effect that keeps the audience guessing until the end. Like any good story, the shark is never shown in the opening scenes. Instead, the movie begins with an attack in near darkness. The shark is alluded to… Even when someone is attacked in daylight, the audience is only privy to an exposed fin and the blood of the victim as it spreads across the water. This approach effectively combines fear of the unknown with the already present fear of the shark to create a chilling atmosphere for movie goers. Is it any wonder then that Jaws was a blockbuster hit?
It’s this high level of suspense that I like most about Jaws. Like a fine murder novel, the scenes draw the audience into the setting, forcing you to identify with the characters. In due time, you begin to fear for your own life. After watching Jaws, you may not swim at the beach ever again… And any movie that can have that type of effect must be good! That’s why Jaws ranks as a definite must-see film.

For people who smoke cigars, it can become something of an obsession. Over time, cigar smokers often develop precise rituals that they adhere to every time they smoke a cigar, and can be quite pedantic about how they store their cigars. If you’re not privy to this obsession of smoking the ‘perfect’ cigar, then you also probably don’t understand the need for a cigar humidor.
The basic purpose of a cigar humidor is to both store and protect cigars. Many cigar enthusiasts believe that cigars need to be stored at a precise temperature in order to maintain their peak flavor. That’s exactly what the cigar humidor does - maintains a constant temperature. Opinions vary, but it’s generally believed that the range between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit is perfect for cigars. The humidity also needs to be controlled, and kept at a level around 70-72% humidity.
Cigar aficionados have long debated about the ideal temperature required for the storing of cigars. Some insist that even a slight fluctuation in temperature can prove detrimental to the flavor of their cigars, and insist on a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Others are a little more flexible and allow a slight amount of temperature fluctuation. Generally they all agree that the lower the temperature, the quicker the cigar will age, which will then cause a reduction in flavor. If you want to maintain the flavor, integrity and color of your favorite cigars, then a cigar humidor is essential.
What features should you look for when purchasing a cigar humidor? The one essential feature is that it must be completely closed once the lid is shut. If the lid isn’t snug and secure, then it’s possible that the temperature or humidity inside will fluctuate. A lid that’s tight also prevents any other outside elements contaminating the cigars, and prevents any moisture exchange. It’s helpful if the inside of the cigar humidor is smooth and seamless, to prevent snagging of cigars (or fingers!). It’s also useful to have fittings inside the humidor to assist in the storing of the cigars.
You can choose from a variety of interior linings, but cedar is generally preferred. The best is Spanish cedar. Finally, make sure you know the exact size of your favorite cigars before you go shopping for a cigar humidor. Otherwise you might get home and find you can’t fit them in! This is very important, because both cigars and humidors come in a wide variety of sizes. As soon as you get your cigar humidor home, start using it, so that your cigars will have a long life, minimal aging and the best flavor possible.

In short, Under The Tuscan Sun is an interesting, and oftentimes hilarious, film that tackles the constant travails of life in general…
Thirty-something San Francisco writer Frances (Diane Lane) spirals into a deep depression when her ten-year marriage ends in divorce. To further complicate matters, she lives in a cramped apartment, and the stress of her divorce has left her with writer’s block. Her good friend Patti (Sandra Oh), happily pregnant and involved in her own committed relationship, tries to cheer up Frances. But nothing seems to work - at least until a vacation is suggested.
When Frances sets off on a tour of Italy, she unexpectedly gets off the bus and purchases a villa in Tuscany. Hundreds of years old and in disrepair, the home is in dire need of massive renovations. Frances devotes her new life to restoring the home, and she hires a ragtag band of immigrants and local people to help her. Sideways star Sandra Oh makes a name for herself playing the role of Patti, a good friend of Frances. Despite her appearance in a dozen plus films, Under The Tuscan Sun is the first time I can recall seeing Sandra Oh in a movie, and I can remember that she really made an impression. She has a distinctive onscreen presence, something unique that I can’t quite identify, and perhaps this contributes in some small way to the current success she’s experiencing.
Meanwhile, Diane Lane creates a likeable and relatable character in Frances. Viewers will have no problem relating to divorcee’s struggles within her personal life, and even the most pessimistic and dour of movie goers must give her credit for making such a bold move. As such, Under The Tuscan Sun manages to create one of those rare films which isn’t so much plot-driven, nor focused on the personality of a monumental life. The film simply serves as a good night’s entertainment (and a break, if one is needed, from the typical big money, high body count Hollywood productions). That’s why Under The Tuscan Sun is a definite must-see film.
